It is now seriously crunch time at the 2026 World Cup. We are at the quarter-finals stage and there will be a mouth-watering clash in the heat of Miami on Saturday evening. After their thrilling 3-2 win against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, England will take on Norway in the US, after the Scandinavian nation shocked Brazil in the round of 16. The all-European matchup will see two of the very best strikers in the game go head-to-head as Harry Kane and Erling Haaland line up on opposite sides.

Since the beginning of the 2022/23 season - when Haaland moved to Borussia Dortmund - both Kane and the Norwegian rank in the top two for the most goals scored for club and country among top five league players. Very different profiles, but they are both relentless. They simply guarantee goals. At this summer's tournament Haaland has seven goals and Kane has six. Both are in the running for the Golden Boot - currently led by Lionel Messi on eight. But who would be the better option up fron for Saturday's clash? Who is the ultimate striker?

Kane vs Haaland - who is the ultimate striker?

Since the 22/23 campaign, Kane has scored a crazy 213 goals in 242 games for Tottenham, Bayern Munich and England. In that same timeframe, Haaland has scored 204 goals in 231 games for Dortmund, Manchester City and Norway. They are frightening numbers. When we go further into the breakdown of the numbers - as illustrated in the graphic below - we can see that Kane has played 19,855 minutes compared to Haaland's 18,814. That's over 1,000 more minutes in the aforementioned period for the Englishman.

Of those numerous goals, 55 of them were penalties for Kane, with Haaland scoring from 12 yards on 31 occasions. That actually means if we strip back the spot-kicks, the Norwegian has 174 non-penalty goals compared to Kane's 158. When it comes to assists the players are actually fairly similar. Kane has 45 assists to Haaland's 31, which is perhaps surprising as we often view Kane as more of a playmaker than his Norwegian counterpart. He likes to drop deep and has a great range of passing.

That brings us to the style of play comparison. The numbers are very similar but the players themselves are very different. Haaland excels in his movement, speed, manipulation of space off of the ball and monstrous ability in the air. He can run in behind and when he gets a run on a defender in the box, he can seldom be stopped. Kane doesn't boast much pace, but what he does obtain is speed of thought and the ability to manipulate his body to earn space to shoot. Few players are better at earning half a yard and few excel more in finishing with little to no back-lift. The contrasting styles, but frightening inevability of them both will be fascinating to watch in Miami. Who will come out on top?
