Harry Kane etched another chapter in the history books of his incredible career after playing an important role in Bayern Munich’s triumph over Real Madrid in the Champions League. The England international has been a revelation since moving to Germany from Tottenham Hotspur and could get his hands on the most prestigious club trophy in football this season. Kane scored Bayern’s second goal in the 4-3 win over Madrid - 6-4 on aggregate - as the Bundesliga champions set up a mouthwatering semi-final against PSG.
It was a landmark goal for several reasons for the lethal 32-year-old. Kane became only the second Englishman in history to score in five consecutive Champions League games and he’s also the only player to score or assist in five consecutive games against Real Madrid in the competition. Incredibly, it was also Kane’s 50th goal of the season for Bayern Munich and we’ve analysed how he compares amongst the superstars to reach that milestone in the fewest games.
Quickest players to reach 50 club goals in a single season
We’ve analysed the data from all players across the top five leagues this century and Kane ranks second. The England international hit the half-century in just 42 games with 31 goals in the Bundesliga, 12 in the Champions League, six in the DB-Pokal and one in the DFL-Supercup. As the graphic below illustrates, Lionel Messi is the only player to reach the milestone in fewer games, requiring just 40 games during the 2012/13 season.
Messi finished the campaign with 60 goals in 50 games and was incredibly impressive in the false nine role for Barcelona. The Argentinian superstar also occupies third place after scoring 50 goals in 42 games in 2011/12, which was matched by Robert Lewandowski in the 2019/20 campaign with Bayern Munich. It’s a list full of world-class attackers with Cristiano Ronaldo featuring four times with Real Madrid with Erling Haaland the only player from outside LaLiga and Bundesliga.
