The Intercontinental derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce is one of the fiercest rivalries in football and Istanbul will come to a standstill on Sunday for a pivotal clash between the two biggest clubs in Türkiye. With just four games remaining in the Süper Lig season, Galatasaray lead their rivals by four points in the table and victory in their home stadium would all but secure a fourth consecutive title.
Fenerbahce haven’t been crowned champions since 2014 and they realistically need to win to preserve any hopes of Gala winning their 26th Turkish top-flight title. Fener’s confidence will be boosted by their statement 2-0 win over Gala in the Super Cup final in January and they’ve improved significantly under Domenico Tedesco. It’s a battle between the squads in the Super Lig with the highest market value and it could be the most valuable game between the sides in history.
Most valuable games in Süper Lig history
Using Transfermarkt’s famed market values, we’ve analysed the most valuable games in Süper Lig history and subsequently between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. To calculate the most valuable game, we’ve added the total market values of the 22 starting players in the fixture to reach a total. And perhaps unsurprisingly, the most valuable game in Süper Lig history was the reverse fixture between Fener and Gala in December, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
As the graphic above illustrates, the combined market value of both starting line-ups was €390m with Fener’s at €180m and Gala at €214m. That total could be eclipsed on Sunday, especially with the news that Victor Osimhen - the most valuable player in the league at €75m - is fit to play. The second most valuable game in Süper Lig history was actually Galatasaray’s trip to Besiktas in March and you can view the full list below.
