The most prestigious of club football competitions returns this Tuesday as the Champions League league phases gets underway. Last season's champions Paris Saint-Germain open their defence against Atalanta on Wednesday evening, whilst the pick of the ties sees Bayern Munich take on Chelsea in Germany. Four teams are making their maiden voyage in Europe's elite competition, with Champions League debuts for Belgian outfit Union Saint-Gilloise, Kazakhstan's Kairat Almaty, Cyprus' Pafos FC and Norway's BodøGlimt. But since the European Cup converted to the Champions League back in the 1992/93 season, which teams have dominated the competition?
At Transfermarkt, we have compiled the all-time Champions League table since 92/93 to determine which teams have got the most points. Knockout games have also been included with three points for a win and games that went to extra-time being counted as a draw and therefore awarding a point to both sides. It makes for an interesting list of teams and highlights the effect clubs have had on UEFA's top club competition in recent decades. Five Premier League sides make the top 20.
Where do teams rank in the all-time Champions League table?
Unsurprisingly, leading the way are the ultimate Champions League kings, Real Madrid. The 15-time winners have accrued as many as 661 points since the 1992/93 season from their 331 matches in the competition. They are over 50 points clear of any other team. In second are Bayern Munich - the Bavarians have 609 points from 308 games. In third are Barcelona with 607 points from 309 matches. Manchester United, who aren't in any European competition this term, take fourth place with 445 points from 228 games in the Champions League.
In fifth position come Serie A side Juventus, with 399 points from 230 games. They are followed in sixth by Chelsea - the Blues have 356 points from 197 matches. In seventh position are Porto - the first non top-five league club - with a total of 353 points from 228 games. Eighth position goes to AC Milan with 340 points from 207 games. In ninth are Arsenal with 337 points from 201 games, while completing the top 10 are Liverpool with 301 points from 163 matches.
