Inter Miami CF have sold midfielder Federico Redondo to LaLiga side Elche. Both sides confirmed the transfer on Thursday. Redondo has signed a contract until the end of the 2029/30 season. Inter Miami have received €2.15 million and will also receive 10% of any future permanent transfer. The deal means that unless Elche sell Redondo in the future for a major transfer fee, Inter Miami have made a significant deficit of over €5m on the Redondo transfer.

“The Club would like to thank Federico for his contributions on and off the pitch throughout his time with Inter Miami, and wish him well in the future,” a club statement by Inter Miami read. The transfer marks what has been a pretty disappointing time for the Argentine midfielder in Major League Soccer.

Signed in a deal worth $8m (€7.45m) from Argentinos Juniors, the son of former Real Madrid and AC Milan star Fernando Redondo, was considered one of the biggest talents in Argentina. Indeed, it was a bit of a surprise that Redondo ended up in MLS rather than one of the big European leagues. But Beckham’s connections to his father and the prospect of playing with Sergio Busquets swayed Federico towards joining the Miami club.

Significant drop in market value – Why Federico Redondo failed at Inter Miami

Redondo, however, could never fulfill the high expectations placed in him at Inter Miami. The central midfielder scored just two goals and four assists in 60 games across all competitions for the Herons. The productivity wasn’t the main issue, though. Not a fast player, Redondo, in combination with Busquets, meant that Miami often lacked pace in midfield when playing against top opponents.

The best example was in the two games against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal, in which Redondo and Busquets were completely outpaced. As a result, the Whitecaps ran through an open door, scoring five goals combined over the two legs. Redondo then also struggled at the FIFA Club World Cup against top opponent, PSG, another club known for its high and constant press. His performances were also reflected in his market value, which dropped from €9m to €5m since being signed from Argentina.
