It’s no secret that Galatasaray are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer with the Istanbul giants eyeing a high-profile addition. Gala’s focus during the transfer window has been completing a deal to secure the return of Victor Osimhen after he fired them to the Süper Lig title last season. The Nigerian is poised to return to the Turkish giants on a permanent deal, which will smash the club’s transfer record but attention will quickly turn towards acquiring a new number one.
Legendary goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who amassed 133 caps for Uruguay, departed at the end of last season after an incredible 15 years in Istanbul. Muslera is adorned by the passionate Gala support but his best days were beyond him and club officials want a new marquee signing. Gala’s three senior goalkeepers on their books are well below the required standard - the trio have a combined market value of just €1.1m - and several high-profile stoppers have been linked. Gianluigi Donnarumma is the latest but he’s unlikely to move to Gala after winning the Champions League despite only having one year left on his contract in Paris. Therefore, we’ve analysed four goalkeeping targets as Gala aim to make a statement signing in that department.
Four Galatasaray goalkeeper targets valued at €20m or lower
Ederson would certainly be a blockbuster arrival as he remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world. There’s been reports that Galatasaray believe they can convince the Brazilian international of their project, with some outlets claiming an agreement has been reached over personal terms. The Manchester City number one has entered the last year of his contract with Pep Guardiola’s side and they face a dilemma over whether to cash in. James Trafford was been strongly linked with a return to the Etihad with City possessing a buy-back clause for the Burnley man.
Gala have also been strongly linked to Emiliano Martinez with his future at Aston Villa uncertain. The Argentinian international was tearful and appeared to waive goodbye on his final appearance at Villa Park last season. Martinez has been linked with several clubs this summer, including the Turkish champions. Turkish clubs benefit from tax advantages and would be willing to offer Martinez a hefty salary and that could prove decisive - as it was with Leroy Sane’s move from Bayern Munich.
Marc-André ter Stegen would represent another high-profile arrival with the Germany international one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the game. Any potential deal for the 33-year-old, however, would be extremely complicated due to Barcelona’s problematic financial situation. Barca want to get Ter Stegen’s wages off their books to facilitate the registration of new signings but he’s currently facing surgery and a potential four-month lay-off. Ter-Stegen has persistent back problems but remains unconvinced about surgery, despite Barcelona’s acquisition of Joan Garcia as their new first-choice stopper.
Yann Sommer is Galatasaray’s priority target, according to recent reports in Italy. The 36-year-old has been a revelation at Inter Milan since joining from Bayern Munich and was instrumental on their run to the Champions League last season. Sommer has also entered the final year of his contract but Inter are reportedly content with the situation and want a fee in excess of his €4m valuation. Of the four proposed options, Sommer would represent the most financially viable goalkeeper and he’s still performing at a high level.
