The 2025 U20 World Cup gers underway in Chile this weekend, with some of the most exciting youngsters in the world aiming to showcase their talent. Scouts from all the biggest clubs in attendance , looking to unearth the next star of the future.
While the tournament is somewhat wedged in between the European domestic calendar, it still promises to showcase some of the most exciting young talents from around the World. Whether it be Erling Haaland, Sergio Aguero or even Lionel Messi, some of the sport’s most decorated stars first cut their teeth at this tournament. But who are the record scorers in the history of the U20 World Cup, since it began in 1977? Let’s find out.
The record goal scorers in U20 World Cup history
Some famous names feature in the top ten list with Javier Saviola the record goalscorer in U20 World Cup history. The Argentinian forward scored an incredible 11 goals in seven games to firmly make his name worldwide, winning the competition in 2001. Brazilian Adaílton ranks second with 10 goals in five games but he was never capped by his country at senior level.
As the graphic above illustrates, Erling Haaland occupies third place with the Norwegian scoring an incredible nine goals in just three games. Argentinian legend Diego Maradona ranks tenth after scoring six goals in six games in the competition. His successor as the pride of Argentinian football, Lionel Messi also scored six goals in the competition but he required seven games and ranks 14th.
