One of the most enthralling transfer sagas this summer looks set to revolve around Aston Villa and England star Morgan Rogers. Premier League champions Arsenal are being heavily linked with the 23 year old, who reportedly would favour a move to the Emirates this transfer window. Manchester United and Chelsea are both also reportedly interested, but it is thought that the Gunners are confident of beating their rivals to the player's signature should he move on this summer.

Rogers has a current market value of €90 million, and a contract at Villa that doesn't expire until 2031, so it will be no easy task prizing him away. The Midlands club can also offer Rogers Champions League football next term. But at Arsenal, he would have the opportunity to play a key role in what is now a trophy-winning team. The exact role he could play at Arsenal remains to be seen, with Rogers able to play both of the left or in the no.10 position.

How does Morgan Rogers compare to Arsenal attackers?

When we compare Rogers' Premier League numbers to those that have been playing in either attacking midfield or off of either wing for Arsenal over the last two seasons, the Aston Villa man comes out on top of the tree. As illustrated in the graphic below, Rogers has 36 league goal contributions (goals + assists) in 74 games since the start of the 2024/25 season. That trumps all of the Arsenal players in similar positions. Bukayo Saka is the first Arsenal player on this list with 31 goal contributions - albeit only in 56 matches with the Englishman wrestling injury problems during that period.

When we then look at the Arsenal left-wingers and attacking midfielders in that period - the positions Rogers would be expected to compete for - they are well off of the Aston Villa man. Leandro Trossard has 28 goal contributions in 69 matches, Eberechi Eze has 25 in 67 (including for Crystal Palace), captain Martin Ødegaard has 19 in 54, whilst Gabriel Martinelli has just 17 in 63. So, Rogers eclipses all of the Arsenal players in his position when it comes to raw numbers, but what else could he bring to the Emirates?

What could Morgan Rogers bring to Arsenal?

If Arsenal are to get a deal over the line for Rogers, one of the players above will undoubtedly have to be sold. Martinelli, Trossard and even Ødegaard have all been linked with moves away from North London this summer. The former two have been reliable options for Arsenal and always be loved by the fans for their efforts in bringing the Premier League trophy back to the club, but neither are good enough to be regular starters in an elite front three. There was a time where Ødegaard looked like being the heir apparent to Kevin De Bruyne in the Premier League, but in the last two seasons his form has fallen off a cliff. Injuries have played a big part in that.

When it comes to Rogers and his best position, it may well just be in the no.10 position behind the striker - where he can drive with the ball and beat players in tight areas to make space. However, the position where Arsenal most need an upgrade is without doubt on the left-wing - where Rogers played much of last season for Aston Villa. Nevertheless, when we look at Rogers' Premier League stats for Aston Villa by position, we can see the different roles he brings to each position he plays.

Rogers actually has the most goal contributions per game when he plays off the left wing, and by far the most goals scored per game. In 27 league matches for Villa off the left Flank, he has scored 12 goals and provided nine assists. Interestingly, on the right wing he has failed to score on any of his 12 league appearances but has provided seven assists, highlighting his ability to find teammates with crosses from his naturally stronger foot.

In the no.10 attacking midfield position, Rogers averages just 0.38 goal contributions per-game, but that doesn't highlight the yards he gets his team up the field. Perhaps Mikel Arteta's team have taken a look at those numbers off the left-wing and believe he can be their superstar on that flank.
