New number this season

Real Madrid have made a number of big moves in the summer transfer window but perhaps the decision that will have the biggest ramifications on the club going forward was to do with the number on the back of a player’s shirt. On Wednesday Kylian Mbappé all but confirmed rumours that the LaLiga giants had granted him the famous No.10 shirt to wear this season, following Luka Modric’s departure from the club. Reports in Spain suggested that players with more experience at the club also sought the famous jersey, but it was ultimately given to Mbappé due to his importance to Xabi Alonso’s team. And that now means that the French striker will need to live up to the lofty expectations that are associated with the number.
Which Real Madrid No.10 scored the most goals and assists?
Some true greats of the game wore the No.10 shirt at Real Madrid and that becomes abundantly clear when we take a look at which players scored the most goals and assists in that particular jersey. As we can see in the table above, none other than Luís Figo bagged the most goal contributions with 152 over the course of his career in the Spanish capital - almost double as many as second-placed Modrić. James Rodríguez and Mesut Özil come third and fourth as more recent No.10s for Madrid, picking up 76 and 69 goals and assists respectively. But, as we can see, the shirt was also worn by timeless greats like Clarance Seedorf, Michael Laudrup and none other than Ferenc Puskás. Although Figo’s record is daunting, it should be manageable for Mbappé if he can continue his goalscoring record of 0.75 goals per game for the LaLiga side in the years to come.
Which Real Madrid No.10 played the most games?
When it comes to which players wore the No.10 jersey the most, it should come as no great surprise to see Modrić’s name top of the list with a remarkable 383 games for the Spanish club. Figo and Seedorf once again feature high on the list, coming in second and third with 245 games and 159 games respectively. Brazilian forward Robinho comes fourth with 136 games in the No.10 shirt, followed by Rodríguez and Özil, then somewhat surprisingly we have Lassana Diarra in seventh place with 68 games in the famous Madrid jersey. But there’s little doubt that Mbappé should quickly make his way up this list in no time, considering the modern demands of football forcing players of his calibre to play more than 50 games per season.
Which Real Madrid No.10 won the most trophies?
Of course, when it comes to Los Blancos the only real stats that matter are how many trophies each star player has won during his time at the club. Some of the best players to play the game have struggled for silverware at Madrid and that’s perhaps rather evident when we take a look at which No.10s have the most medals. As we can see, Modrić is once again top of the list, but is this time joined by Rafa Martín Vázquez and Manuel Velázquez, who played for Madrid in the 90s and 60s respectively. They sit above none other than Puskás, who won 10 trophies during his time at the club. Rounding up the top five is Colombian midfielder Rodríguez who won nine. While Mbappé is certainly used to winning trophies, he failed to win any major silverware during his first season in Madrid. So the French star will have to make sure his team start winning some competitions if he hopes to catch Puskás, Modrić & Co.
