Lennon Miller has completed his move to Serie A side Udinese to earn Motherwell a club record fee. The 18-year-old progressed through the Steelmen’s academy to become their youngest ever player when debuting against Inverness in August 2022. Miller’s stratospheric rise continued as he became Motherwell’s youngest ever captain when he led the Lanarkshire side out against Rangers at Hampden in November 2024.

The talented midfielder is widely viewed as one of the best Scottish talents to emerge across the last decade and he’s been linked with numerous clubs but Udinese have won the race for his signature. It’s understood that the Italian outfit will pay an initial fee of around €5.5 million to Motherwell with further add-ons and a significant sell-on clause included in the deal. The fee Motherwell will initially receive for Miller eclipses their previous biggest sale, when David Turnbull moved to Celtic for €3m in 2020.

Miller follows in the footsteps of several Scottish players in recent years by moving to Serie A and it’s proved a fruitful approach for Italian clubs. Lewis Ferguson, Aaron Hickey and Josh Doig all excelled in the Italian top-flight, while Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay, especially, shone as Napoli won the Scudetto last season. Miller only had one year left on his deal at Fir Park and he will be fondly remembered by the Motherwell faithful for contributing 16 goals contributions in 76 appearances in claret and amber. The midfielder made his Scotland debut earlier this year and his market value soared by €6.4m across the last twelve months to become the most valuable player on Transfermarkt outside of Celtic and Rangers.

Speaking after completing his move to Udinese, Miller thanked Motherwell for aiding his development, stating: “Motherwell is all I’ve ever known. It’s been my home since I was a young boy, and I’ve achieved my dream of playing in the first-team, playing in the big stadiums and wearing the armband. My thanks goes to all the supporters for taking me in. The support up and down the country every week has been exceptional. For all the coaches I’ve worked under and who have helped me improve as a player and as a man, thank you. I simply wouldn’t be here without their guidance and support.”
