A year to forget

The pressure on managers has never been higher in the history of football with the rise of social media intensifying the scrutiny. Football is ultimately about opinions and now every supporter in the world has a platform to voice their views. From tactics to post-match comments, managers are under the spotlight for every action, and every statement.
Arguably no manager in Europe is feeling the pressure more currently than Ange Postecoglou. Nottingham Forest’s appointment of the Australian boss has proved disastrous so far with Postecoglou failing to win any of his first seven games in charge. Forest fans have already turned on Postecoglou and he’s now winless in his last 11 games in the Premier League. The 60-year-old was sacked by Tottenham in the summer due to Spurs’ 17th place finish in the Premier League, despite winning the Europa League, and no manager has lost more games in 2025 than Postecoglou."
Which managers have lost the most games in 2025?
From analysing Transfermarkt’s data from managers of top five league clubs across all competitions in 2025, Postecoglu has lost the most games in the calendar year. The former Celtic boss has taken charge of 39 games for Tottenham and Nottingham Forest but lost 21 of them. As the graphic below illustrates, Girona manager Míchel ranks second with 18 defeats in 30 games.
Girona enjoyed great success under Míchel across the last few years, gaining promotion to LaLiga before qualifying for the Champions League but they’re languishing third bottom of the league this season. Interestingly alongside Postecoglou, four other coaches to have managed Premier League clubs in 2025 feature in the top ten list. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Kieran McKenna were relegated with Leicester and Ipswich respectively, while Vitor Pereira remains in position at Wolves. Rúben Amorim’s problems at Manchester United have been well-documented with the Portuguese boss losing 15 of 39 games in 2025 - including the Europa League final to Postecoglou’s Spurs.
