Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United. First reported by the Athletic, Newcastle have landed an eye-watering fee for the Italian international with Tottenham to pay an initial €108m, plus another €8.8m in bonuses based upon European qualification. Tottenham have already signed West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, which smashed their current transfer record but the signing of Tonali will eclipses that. The 26-year-old is also now the 9th most expensive player in Premier League history.
It’s understood that the Italian’s representatives made clear to Newcastle chiefs that he wanted to seek a new opportunity this summer and it represents a significant profit for the Magpies. Tonali was enticed by the move to London, while he will also earn a much higher wage and he’s been sold on the project by countryman Roberto De Zerbi. It will be a summer of upheaval at Newcastle with Anthony Gordon joining Barcelona and there’s also legitimate interest in club captain Bruno Guimarães from Arsenal.
It’s been an incredibly busy start to the summer for Tottenham as they aim to overhaul their squad and transform their squad after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Before agreeing to take charge for the final six games of the season and mastermind their escape, De Zerbi sought assurances that he’d be backed in the transfer window and that’s certainly been the case. Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi joined on free transfers, Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton with Fernandes and Tonali bolstering the midfield department.
