Antonín Kinský was handed his Champions League debut for Tottenham Hotspur’s last 16 clash against Atlético Madrid but it ended in disaster. Igor Tudor made a brave call to replace Guglielmo Vicario after a string of poor performances and hand the goalkeeping jersey to Kinský. It was the 22-year-old’s first start since October in the Carabao Cup but it lasted just 17 minutes as Tudor made a ruthless call.

The interim boss, who has now lost four consecutive games since his appointment, made the ruthless decision to substitute Kinský after several mistakes. The Czech goalkeeper gifted Atletico the opening goal after slipping, which allowed Antoine Griezmann to score after just eight minutes. Kinský made another glaring error on 15 minutes, passing the ball straight to Julián Alvarez to make it 3-0 to Atletico and that ensured an unwanted Champions League record.

Alvarez’s effort crossed the line after 14 minutes and 59 seconds, which is the earliest a club has ever conceded three goals in the history of the Champions League knockout stages. That will be an unwelcome statistic for Kinský on a night that he will never forget for the wrong reasons. The goalkeeper was visibly distraught leaving the pitch and had to be consoled by several teammates and Tudor has received widespread criticism for his handling of the situation.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea posted on X: “No one who hasn't been a goalkeeper can understand how difficult it is to play in this position. Keep your head up and you will go again.” There’s now mounting pressure on Tudor as he’s had absolutely no impact, lost four games in galling fashion with Spurs in serious danger of being relegated from the Premier League. Tottenham have now lost six consecutive games for the first time in their history and it’s looking bleak for the North London giants.
