It’s beyond doubt that Manuel Ugarte’s move to Manchester United hasn’t worked out and it’s best for all parties to cut ties this summer. United decided the Uruguayan could solve their midfield issues and they splurged €50 million to sign him from PSG, late in the summer window of 2024. Erik ten Hag departed soon after and it was believed that Ugarte could return to his best levels under Rúben Amorim.

The midfielder blossomed under the Portuguese boss at Sporting CP but his struggles continued under Amorim and he failed to nail down a place as a regular starter. Ugarte’s plight has continued under Michael Carrick and the 26-year-old hasn’t started a single game, totalling just 57 minutes. The 24-year-old wanted to depart Old Trafford on-loan in January but United refused as they lacked cover in centre-midfield. It’s inevitable, however, that Ugarte departs this summer and we’ve analysed four potential destinations.

Four transfer destinations for Manuel Ugarte this summer

Galatasaray

Galatasaray were extremely keen on Ugarte during the January window and reportedly made a move for him late in the window. It’s understood that the Turkish side will rekindle their interest in the summer and it’s a realistic destination for the midfielder. Gala can offer Ugarte the opportunity to play in the Champions League and they could afford his high wage demands.

Fenerbahce

Galatasaray’s fierce rivals could also enter the race for Ugarte and one of his best performances for United arrived against Fenerbahce in the Champions League. Again, Fener could afford his wage demands as evidenced by several former Premier League players already being on their books. One potential issue over a move to the Super Lig is that Ugarte might want to continue playing in a top five league.

Roma

It’s understood that Ugarte has several suitors in Italy and Roma could be one potential destination. I Giallorossi are likely to lose their star midfielder Manu Koné this summer with several clubs eyeing the French international and Ugarte could be a good replacement. Roma are still engulfed in a battle to secure a Champions League place next that season and that could provide decisive in their attempts to sign Ugarte.

Atlético Madrid

Ugarte seems perfectly suited to a Diego Simeone side with his industrious and tenacious style fitting perfectly. Atletico are well-stocked in midfield but Ugarte would back himself to push for a starting place in their side. Again, Atletico could afford United’s asking price and the player’s wages and they were reportedly keen before he made the move to PSG.
