The aircraft carrier ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi (C551) sailed from Italy to Indonesia.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan) confirmed that the ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi (551) aircraft carrier will undergo the handover process from Italy to Indonesia upon its arrival in Jakarta. The 180-meter-long aircraft carrier produced by Fincantieri has already left the Port of Taranto, scheduled to pass through the Suez Canal in Egypt, with scheduled transit stops in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Colombo, Sri Lanka.
"Upon its arrival in Indonesia, the former Giuseppe Garibaldi vessel will first dock in Jakarta. The acceptance ceremony will be carried out through the signing of the grant handover documents," said Head of the Information Bureau of the Defense Ministry Secretariat General Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait when contacted in Jakarta, Thursday (27/8/2026).
He could not yet confirm the series of ceremonies in Jakarta. This is because the handover process is under the full authority of the Indonesian Navy. After the handover process is completed, Rico said, the vessel will then head to Teluk Ratai Naval Base, Lampung.
Previously, Head of the Navy Information Service (Kadispenal) Rear Admiral Tunggul said that the process of completing the base as the location where the aircraft carrier will berth in Lampung is still underway. "For the readiness of the base infrastructure in Lampung, the finishing progress is currently underway, and it is expected to be completed by the time Garibaldi arrives in Indonesia," he said.
When asked again about the completeness of the facilities and the progress of the construction. Nevertheless, Tunggul did not explain the matter further. He only confirmed that the base would be completed and fully operational by the end of September 2026.
