While some clubs are truly thriving in this season’s Premier League and others are languishing under dreadful form, Manchester City seem to be somewhere in between. Off the back of finishing third last season on their worst points return since Pep Guardiola took over at the club, the Etihad side currently sit second in the league table and are showing very little ability or intent to challenge for this season’s league title.

That, largely, is due to the fact that Guardiola’s team are in something of a transition. The Spanish tactician bid farewell to influential stars like Ederson, Kevin De Bruyne, İlkay Gündoğan and Kevin Walker in the summer transfer window and while Man City did spend an impressive €207 million on new players, the incoming stars have yet to truly step into the big shoes left behind by their predecessors. And when we take a look at which players have gone up and down in market value in Transfermarkt’s Premier League market value update, we can see how much of a mixed bag Guardiola’s squad truly is at this moment in time.

Manchester City: Market value analysis

Following the aforementioned market value update, Man City’s squad market value dropped by €16m to €577m. That was the biggest drop for any squad in the Premier League and now means that Guardiola’s team are the second most valuable in the English top-flight. In total, eight Man City players lost market value in the most recent update, with minor drops for back-up or unused players like Stefan Ortega (-€2m), Kalvin Phillips (-€2m), John Stones (-€5m) and Nathan Aké (-€5m). But, as we can see in the graphic below, there were also some big drops for Guardiola’s most trusted players: Rúben Dias lost €5m in market value, Bernardo Silva saw his market value drop by €6m to €32m, Phil Foden saw his drop by €20m to €80m and former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri saw his market value drop from €110m to €90m.

However, it wasn’t all bad news for the former English champions. Oscar Bobb, Rayan Aït-Nouri and Jérémy Doku all saw their market values rise by €5m, while new signings James Trafford and Tijjani Reijnders both saw their market values rise to fall in line with their transfer fees and form. However, the largest market value increase within Guardiola’s squad went to young England left-back Nico O’Reilly, whose continued rise as an exciting talent at the Etihad club has seen his market value rise from €18m to €30m.
