It was a special night in Endrick’s career on Sunday when he scored a hat-trick in Lyon’s 5-2 win over Metz in Ligue 1. The Brazilian showcased his unquestionable ability with several devastating finishes to claim the first hat-trick of his career. Endrick produced two clinical strikes before adding his third from the penalty spot to continue his impressive start in France.
“That was the first hat trick of my life, I'm very happy, truly,” beamed Endrick at full-time. “It's an incredible day in my life. I think it's been really great playing in this league. It's strong and physical, with a lot of aggression. I like that. It wasn't a mistake (coming to Lyon). Life is like that.” After his struggles in Madrid, Endrick is beginning to demonstrate why he was regarded as a generational talent and he’s bolstering his chances of achieving his World Cup dream.
Endrick’s excellent start at Lyon
Real Madrid’s €47.5 million acquisition of Endrick in December 2022 sparked huge excitement as he’d been compared to Ronaldo and Pelé after his breakthrough at Palmeiras. The Brazilian, however, badly struggled for minutes at Madrid and it was clear that he needed to depart in January to revive his hopes of a call-up for the World Cup. In over 18 months, Endrick only played 946 minutes for Madrid and just 11 minutes in LaLiga this season. Several clubs chased his signature but Lyon made a compelling case and promised him a starting spot and he’s made a fantastic start. Endrick scored the winning goal away to Lille on his Lyon debut and he provided a crucial assist against Brest before his heroics against Metz.
The 19-year-old is averaging 1.03 goals per 90 minutes for Les Gones, which is an improvement of his attacking output at Madrid of 0.67 goals per90. Interestingly, Paulo Fonseca deployed the Brazilian from the right in his opening two games and he looked very dangerous cutting in on his preferred left-foot. Endrick has played the vast majority of his football as a central striker and he returned to his favoured role against Metz, but learning a new position will boost his development. It’s no secret that Endrick dreams of playing at the World Cup and Carlo Ancelotti supported his loan move to Lyon. Several players have aspirations of leading the line for the Seleção but Endrick will firmly be in contention - if he can maintain his current form for the remainder of his loan at Lyon.
