With the season at the halfway point, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 477 Liga Portugal players. Overall, there has been very little change as Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand and Porto’s Samu Aghehowa remain the most valuable players in Portugal with a market value of €50 million each. But like every player in the top 10, their market value remains unchanged. Instead, the Liga Portugal update focuses on updating the market values of younger players further down the list.
One player who stands out is 19-year-old Victor Froholt. “He only arrived last summer and is just 19, but despite that, he is already an undisputed starter, showing lots of quality,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Portugal Gonçalo Tristão Santos said about the Porto teenager. “In my opinion, he is one of the most promising midfielders in the world, and Porto are managing to develop his potential very well. He could be one of the next big sales in Portuguese football.” With that in mind, Froholt saw his market value increase 36.4% from €22m to €30m.
Another player to watch at Porto is William Gomes. “Despite being far from an undisputed starter and often coming off the bench, William Gomes has been one of FC Porto’s most influential players this season,” Santos said. “He always brings something extra to the game and leaves his mark. He has quality, is very young, only 19, and I believe it won’t take long for him to earn more space in Porto’s first team.” Despite his limited role in the squad, William Gomes has managed seven goals in 22 games across all competitions this season, and his market value increased by 33.3% from €15m to €20m.
Liga Portugal market values: Talents João Simões and Gianluca Prestianni up
Away from Porto, two other talents stood out as part of the December market value update. The first player to watch is Sporting’s João Simões. “He has been one of the surprises of the season at Sporting,” Santos said. “At the moment, he is already considered a regular starter in Rui Borges’ team, and it will be difficult to take him out of the starting eleven. He is a very young and up-and-coming player.” The 18-year-old midfielder saw his market value increase by 150% from €6m to €15m.
Another young player to watch is Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni. “Prestianni is a player who was already at Benfica but had not yet shown his full value and, this season, is managing to establish himself and even start in some matches,” Santos said. “He has grown a lot, gained importance within the team, and that is why his market value has increased.” The 19-year-old Argentine forward saw his market value increase by 50% from €8m to €12m.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
