Huge upgrade for Newcastle striker

This October, there were plenty of changes in Transfermarkt's latest Premier League market value update. One player who benefitted heavily was new Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade. He was the biggest winner of the entire update. After his explosive start to life at St James' Park, the 22-year-old striker’s market value has soared by a remarkable +€35 million to €65m. That also marked one of the biggest single jumps in Premier League history. Such a rise doesn’t just reflect just his form; the German moved to the North East from Stuttgart for an initial €75m this summer.
Whilst most people would agree that Newcastle slightly overpaid in the panic to replace Alexander Isak, Woltemade has started life in his new colours very well, notching in each of his first three Premier League games at St James' Park, as well as scoring an audacious back-heel in Saturday's defeat to Brighton. The striker's leap joins a select group of players who’ve experienced similar surges - those whose trajectories bent sharply upwards. Here’s a look back at the biggest all-time upgrades in a single Transfermarkt market value update - the moments when football’s most promising talents became headline-valued stars overnight.
The biggest market value increases in Premier League history
The biggest ever winner from a single Premier League market value update was the Egyptian king, Mohamed Salah all the way back in May 2018. The Liverpool winger scored 32 Premier League goals, and a further 10 in the Champions League during his first season at Anfield, and was rewarded with a huge +€70m increase to take his market value from €80m to €150m. There is then a huge drop off to the rest of the list, with four players having been awarded a +€40m upgrade. We have ranked them by the highest market value they went up too. In second is Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne, who reached €150m in January 2018. In third is Chelsea's Cole Palmer who shot from €90m to €130m in December of last year.
Fourth goes to Tottenham's Harry Kane who reached €120m in January 2018, whilst Salah himself crops up again in fifth having gone up to €80m earlier that season - also in the January 2018 update. We then have a further three players who have managed a +€35m upgrade. Former Liverpool winger Sadio Mané saw his market value go from €85m to €120m in June 2019. De Bruyne returns to the top 10, having had his value increased to €110m in January 2018, whilst Woltemade now finds himself in eighth position after the update this October. Manchester City's Jérémy Doku takes ninth after a +€32m increase to €60m in November 2023, whilst former Chelsea star Eden Hazard completes the top 10 after a +€30m upgrade to €150m in November 2018.
