With the season fast approaching the halfway point, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 492 Süper Lig players. While Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen remains first with a market value of €75m, the gap to second place has grown after Fenerbahçe’s Jhon Durán saw his market value drop by €3m from €35m to €32m. Durán isn’t the only prominent star with a market value drop, either. But we will break it down player by player.
“Durán joined Fenerbahçe on loan but has not met expectations so far,” Editor at Transfermarkt.com.tr Sinan Yener said. “His one-season cost is over €20 million, and he was signed with the hope that he would have an impact similar to Osimhen. However, due to injuries, he missed many matches and mostly came on as a substitute, which prevented him from finding consistency.” Indeed, Durán’s three goals and two assists in 13 games don’t make for happy reading. It also raises questions over his future. “His contract belongs to Saudi club Al-Nassr,” Yener said. “But he is still young and has potential, which is why we dropped him by just €3m.”
Another former Premier League star now playing at Fenerbahçe also saw his market value drop: Edson Álvarez. “His market value has now dropped by €3m since he moved from the Premier League, the most valuable league in the world, to the Süper Lig, which is considered a level below,” Yener said. “Although Álvarez is performing well at Fenerbahçe, his €22 million purchase option is below his previous market value, so a downward adjustment was made.” This time Álvarez dropped by €2m from €24m to €22m.
Süper Lig market values: Nene up, Sané down – Talents to watch
It wasn’t all bad news at Fenerbahçe, however, as 22-year-old forward Dorgeles Nene saw his market value increase by €1m from €17m to €18m. “Nene is one of the young players in the Süper Lig who has the potential to move to a top-five European league,” Yener said. “Fenerbahçe signed him for around €22 million, including bonuses. He is very open to development, fast, and contributes to goals.”
Nene is one of three talented stars to keep an eye on. At Trabzonspor, two young stars have stood out this season: Christ Inao Oulaï and Arseniy Batagov. “Christ Inao Oulaï was the biggest riser in the update,” Yener said. He is a player with clear potential and substantial upside. “Despite coming from a lower league, he is performing very well in the Süper Lig. He was also called up to the Ivory Coast national team for the Africa Cup of Nations. Several clubs from major leagues are following him, and he could be Trabzonspor’s next big transfer sale.” Oulaï saw his market value increase by 100% from €4m to €8m. His teammate Batagov remains just slightly ahead of him after his market value increased by €2m, from €7m to €9m. “Italian clubs in particular are monitoring him closely, and recent reports say Napoli are interested. However, since Batagov does not yet play regularly in European competitions or for the Ukraine senior national team, his value remains at €9 million.”
Finally, at Galatasaray, Leroy Sané has improved his form and played his way back into the German national team. But despite his performances, the 29-year-old saw his market value reduced from €25m to €23m. “Sané performed very well in Germany’s recent matches and has contributed with goals in the Champions League and for Galatasaray,” Yener said. “However, €25 million was considered too high for a 29-year-old player playing outside the top five leagues, so his value was lowered to €23 million.”
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
