Going backwards?

After things had looked like they may have picked up for Tottenham, following convincing wins against Brentford and Slavia Prague, a timely reminder was served up at the City Ground. Spurs were taken apart by Sean Dyche's Nottingham Forest, losing 3-0 to the relegation-threatened outfit. They were the inferior side throughout. It means that Thomas Frank's team are now 11th in the table, and pressure is beginning to crack up on the Dane.

Last season was a strange campaign for Tottenham. They won their first trophy in 17 years as they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final, but it was a disastrous domestic campaign, with Spurs finishing as low as 17th in the Premier League table. They got just 38 points. That eventually led to manager Ange Postecoglou getting relieved of his duties. But in fact, after a fairly promising start under Frank, Spurs are actually worse off than they were at this stage last term. Worrying times. It's almost relegation form.
Tottenham 24/25 vs 25/26 compared
Last season was Spurs' worst ever Premier League points total (38) and worst ever Premier League final position (17th). It looked like there was only room for improvement this term. But if we actually compare Tottenham's record after 16 games this term, to their numbers after 16 matches last season, the North London club are actually doing worse. At this stage last season, Spurs had 23 points and were 10th in the table. Now, they have 22 points and are 11th. Back in the 2024/25 campaign, Postecoglou's side had scored as many as 36 goals and conceded 19. Under Frank they have scored just 25 and let in 21.

The idea was that Frank would come in and make Tottenham more solid, tactically adaptable and harder to beat. However, in reality, the results are no better, and the football is far less exciting to watch than it was under the Australian Postecoglou. With the promoted sides putting up a far better fight this time around and a much better relegation battle looming, it's not completely unfeasible that Tottenham find themselves in that fight. Results and performances must improve.
