Hirving Lozano will not return to San Diego FC for the 2026 Major League Soccer season. San Diego FC sporting director Tyler Heaps announced the decision during a media availability earlier on Friday for a group of journalists.
"We have communicated with Hirving and his representatives that he will not be part of the sporting plans moving forward," Heaps said in a video posted on San Diego Futbol's Instagram account. "That was not a decision that was taken lightly. That was something that was well talked through from owners down to leadership down to myself and [San Diego head coach] Mikey [Varas], and has been communicated with the rest of the group. So we're working with [Lozano] and his representatives to find the best solution and the best environment moving forward."
The questions were asked after Lozano trained separately from the main group on Friday. San Diego signed the Mexican national team player ahead of the club’s inaugural 2025 season in a deal worth €12m as a Designated Player from PSV Eindhoven. Lozano, who earned $7.63 million in guaranteed compensation, scored 11 goals and nine assists in 34 games across all competitions for San Diego last season. But the winger was suspended by the club ahead of the MLS Cup Playoffs for a reported locker room altercation.
Hirving Lozano to leave San Diego: What happens next?
Following his suspension, Lozano scored two goals and recorded one assist across four MLS Cup Playoff games. But the forward would come off the bench in all four of his playoff appearances. Now it appears his time at San Diego could be over as the club will be looking to either loan out, sell or trade the 30-year-old Mexican superstar. Despite the episode in San Diego, demand should be high with clubs in Europe, Mexico, and MLS likely interested in his services.
