One of the most protracted sagas of the transfer window is over after Chelsea confirmed the capture of Alejandro Garnacho. It’s understood that Chelsea will pay Manchester United €46.2 million, with a 10% sell-on clause included. The two English Premier League clubs had been locked in negotiations for several weeks before striking an agreement. Garnacho was present in the directors' box at Stamford Bridge as the Blues beat Fulham 2-0 on Saturday.
Garnacho joins Chelsea on a seven-year contract until 2032 after passing a medical on Thursday. The Argentinian winger has been determined to join the Stamford Bridge club this summer after falling out with Rúben Amorim after the Europa League final. The 21-year-old will compete with Jamie Gittens and Pedro Neto for a starting spot at left-wing in Enzo Maresca’s preferred 4-3-3 formation and it will represent a significant sale for Man United.
Where does Alejandro Garnacho rank amongst Manchester United’s record sales
Garnacho joined Man United from Atlético Madrid as a 16-year-old in 2020 for just €465k, so his departure to Chelsea will represent a significant profit. Moreover, Garnacho registers as a homegrown player and that will be important in terms of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. Garnacho departs Old Trafford with 48 goal contributions in 144 games and he will be aiming to improve his attacking output at Chelsea as he continues his development.
As the graphic above illustrates, Garnacho becomes United’s fourth biggest sale in their history at €46.2m. The Argentina international will overtake David Beckham in the list with the legendary Englishman famously joining Real Madrid for €37.5m in 2003. Cristiano Ronaldo’s €94m move to Los Blancos in 2009 remains United’s record sale and it’s highly unlikely that will be eclipsed in the near future.
