The Vancouver Whitecaps have added forward Cheikh Sabaly from FC Metz in a transfer worth €1 million without add-ons and bonuses. Sabaly was in the final year of his contract, and this was FC Metz's last chance to generate a transfer fee for the 26-year-old Senegalese forward. Sabaly has signed a contract through the 2028/29 season with a club option for one additional season.

“Cheikh is an athletic, dynamic attacking player who last season helped his team with 19 goal participations to promote to Ligue 1,” Vancouver Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a club statement. “He has developed in highly competitive environments with Metz and the Senegal national team, and we believe the quality and experience he brings will make an immediate impact on our group. We are excited to welcome Cheikh to Vancouver.”

Sabaly arrives after winning the AFCON with Senegal in Morocco. The forward featured in two matches, adding one assist in Senegal’s 3-0 win over Botswana on matchday 1. Overall, Sabaly has featured in 16 senior games for his country. Capable of playing on either wing and as a center-forward, Sabaly has managed 21 goals and 11 assists in 122 games across all competitions for Metz. His most productive season was last year, when he managed 15 goals in 33 Ligue 2 games.

Vancouver Whitecaps add Sabaly: Want to “compete for trophies”

“I’m very excited to join Vancouver Whitecaps FC," Sabaly said. “This will be my first experience playing in North America, and I can’t wait to help the team continue to compete for trophies by bringing my best on the pitch. I’m really looking forward to meeting the fans at our home matches and giving everything I have for them.”
