Following another busy Premier League weekend, attention turns to the EFL Cup this week with the quarter-finals getting underway this Tuesday. Across the last 21 seasons, only three teams outside of the traditional 'Big Six' teams have won the EFL Cup - Birmingham City in 2011, Swansea City in 2013 and Newcastle last season. However, this season things could be different. Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are the only 'Big six' teams left in the last eight. Elsewhere, fans of other clubs can also start dreaming of Wembley glory.

Crystal Palace and Brentford have enjoyed good starts to the season, and are both in the last eight of the EFL Cup. Fulham endured a tough opening to the campaign, but seem to be moving in the right direction again now, whilst League One Cardiff City are the only non-Premier League team in the quarter-finals. There is a possibility this year's winner could be a side who haven't tasted EFL Cup glory for sometime or maybe even never. So how long has the wait been for each remaining side? The quarter-final fixtures are as follows: Cardiff v Chelsea, Manchester City v Brentford, Newcastle v Fulham, Arsenal vs Crystal Palace.

As illustrated in the graphic above, four of the remaining eight teams in this season's FA Cup have never won it in their entire history. For each of Brentford, Cardiff, Crystal Palace and Fulham it would be their first EFL Cup triumph. The Bluebirds lost in the 2011/12 EFL Cup final on penalties to Liverpool, whilst the other three sides have never even made it to the final.

Meanwhile, despite Arsenal being the most successful team in the history of the FA Cup, the Gunners haven't won the EFL Cup for as long as 32 years, and have only won it twice in their entire history. For Chelsea, the wait has now been 10 years, with the last of their five trophies coming in 2015. Man City are the most successful ever team in the EFL Cup, winning it four times in-a-row between 2017 and 2021 - but that was the last time they lifted it four years ago. Meanwhile, Newcastle are looking to retain the trophy after winning the League Cup for the very first time last March.
