The transfer window closed on Monday night for the majority of top leagues, after another hectic deadline day. Alexander Isak’s protracted move to Liverpool was finally completed for a Premier League record fee of €145 million. Clubs can still sell players with transfer windows still open for several leagues, including the Süper Lig and the Saudi Pro League - two top destinations for unwanted players.
It was another crazy transfer window with so many top clubs strengthening their squads by spending big on new signings. In fact, the total spending across the transfer window eclipsed €9 billion, which is a new record, breaking the total spend of €8.86b from the 2023/24 season. But which clubs have spent the most on transfer fees this summer? We’ve analysed the numbers using Transfermarkt data to provide the answers.
Which clubs spend the most during the summer transfer window?
Interestingly, nine of the top ten biggest spending clubs this summer are from the English Premier League. The 20 clubs spent over €3b between them with Liverpool the biggest spenders in the window with €482m invested in new players. The three most expensive signings of the window were all made by the Anfield club in Isak, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitiké. Liverpool did make €220m in player sales but they still rank second for net spend at €262m, with Arsenal having the highest net spend of €282m.
As the graphic above illustrates, Chelsea rank second for spending with €328m underwritten on new players. Chelsea, however, have raised more than any clubs in sales (€322.25m) and they have a positive balance this summer of €4m. Arsenal, Newcastle United and Manchester United complete the top five based on total spend with newly-promoted Sunderland making the top ten. Bayer Leverkusen are the only non-English club in the list with Barcelona way down in 80th place.
