The Champions League has produced some of the most breathtaking goals in football history - but sometimes the smallest detail, a single step from 12 yards, has defined entire campaigns. Penalties may look straightforward, yet under the glare of Europe’s brightest lights, they become a test of nerve as much as technique. We have seen some of the greatest ever players fluff their lines.

Since the competition’s modern era began in 1992/93, certain players have mastered that pressure, turning the spot-kick into a weapon of reliability. From forwards who thrived on responsibility to midfield generals trusted to deliver in decisive moments, these are the penalty specialists who have left their mark on Champions League history. Transfermarkt takes a closer look at the players with the most goals from the spot, excluding shootouts.

Which players have scored the most penalties in the Champions League?

Two players are currently tied at the top of the rankings. The competition's all-time top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo and current Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski have both scored 19 Champions League penalties. The Polish forward will have a chance to become the outright leader this season. Just behind that duo is the majestic Lionel Messi - the Argentine scored 18 Champions League spot-kicks. There is then a big gap to three players tied in fourth place. Ruud van Nistelrooy, Sergio Agüero and Harry Kane each have scored 11 Champions League penalties - the Englishman will be hoping to add to his tally with Bayern Munich this term.

Tied in seventh, with 10 Champions League penalties scored apiece are former Portuguese winger Luís Figo and ex-Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho. Moving down to ninth and four players are tied. Legendary Brazilian forward Rivaldo and Bayern hero Thomas Müller have both scored eight spot-kicks in the Champions League. As have Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, who will both be hoping to climb this list this season with Manchester City and Real Madrid respectively. The Frenchman already scored twice from twelve yards on match-day one.
