Transfermarkt is celebrating its 25th birthday this week with its community of six million users across 27 international domains. It all began in 2000 when Matthias Seidel found the company as a hobby to track Werder Bremen news but it developed into the biggest football website in the world. Transfermarkt is recognised across every continent in the world and is used by players, clubs and supporters on a daily basis.
Transfermarkt has player profiles on 1.3 million players and continues to collect accurate statistics on hundreds of thousands of players from across the globe. It’s said that the hardest thing to do in football is putting the ball in the back of the net and Transfermarkt has the data for the best goalscorers around the world. But which player has scored the most goals since Transfermarkt launched in 2000? Let’s find out!
The most goals since 2000?
Unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo has the most goals of any player this century with the Portuguese superstar also amassing the most games since 2000. The 40-year-old has scored an incredible 944 goals across his career for club and country with his latest goal arriving in Portugal’s Nations League final win over Spain. Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest Argentinian footballer in history, ranks second with 882 goals. Barcelona icon Messi and Real Madrid legend Ronaldo are the two best footballers of their generation and have been compared constantly during their careers.
As the graphic above illustrates, Robert Lewandowski occupies third spot with two other legendary strikers completing the top five in Luis Suárez and Zlatan Ibrahimović. Harry Kane will be expected to surpass the 500-goal landmark next season with the England captain on 479. Kylian Mbappé will have aspirations of breaking into the top five across his career with the Real Madrid striker sneaking into the top twenty list with 389.
