Premier League clubs have now spent more money on players from other Premier League clubs than ever before in a summer transfer window. A flurry of weekend deals, including Jacob Ramsey’s €45.2 million move to Newcastle and Nottingham Forest signing James McAtee and Omari Hutchinson for a combined €68.9m means that English top-flight clubs have to date spent a remarkable €844.6m on players from other Premier League clubs.

Not only does that figure loom large over the money spent in other divisions - with the next highest being the Bundesliga on just €481.5m spent on players from the German top-flight - but it’s also the largest amount of money spent on internal signings. Which is quite remarkable, considering the fact that there is still a considerable amount of time left in this summer’s transfer window. As we can see in the chart below, this summer’s figure has already overtaken last summer’s total of €803.5m and surpassed the 23/24 high of €829.9m. And few would bet against the Premier League breaking the €900m barrier before the end of this window.

It’ll come as no great surprise to fans of the Premier League that the league’s biggest clubs are spending big sums of money on players within the league. After all, English players have always demanded a certain premium price due to the nature of them filling certain quotes within any given squad, but there has also been a concerted effort by numerous clubs to sign players that have proven themselves within the English top-flight. This is certainly true of the biggest clubs in the league, with Manchester United signing Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha for around €150m, as well as Mohammed Kudus and João Pedro moving to Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea respectively for around €64m each. But many mid-table clubs have also followed a similar path, with the aforementioned double signing from Forest, as well as Brentford paying €42.8m for Dango Ouattara and Burnley paying €28.7m for Lesley Ugochukwu.

Aside from the raw transfer fees, we can also see this trend hitting new peaks when we look at the proportion of deals made by Premier League clubs involving other clubs within the division. As we can see in the graph above, around 20 percent of all transfers made by English top-flight clubs in the summer window have typically been internal transfers within the division. But this summer has seen that figure skyrocket up to 28 percent. Which certainly goes some way to explain why the Premier League is spending more money than ever before on Premier League players.
