Transfermarkt’s renowned market values are recognised around the world, across every continent. First established in 2004, Transfermarkt has assigned values to players based on numerous factors and they are updated regularly across the season.

The market values are industry recognised as they’ve been cited by media outlets, clubs and players. Last week, Transfermarkt celebrated its 25th anniversary as we reflect upon an incredible journey from a passionate hobby to one of the biggest football websites in the world. Therefore, we’ve analysed which players have received the biggest market value downgrades across a single season.

The biggest market value downgrades in single season

Eden Hazard received the biggest market value downgrade in a single season after his valuation dropped by €70 million across the 2019/20 campaign. The Belgian joined Real Madrid in 2019 from Chelsea for €121m when his market value was €150m but he ended the season with his valuation at €80m after scoring just one goal in 22 games - Hazard features twice the top ten list as his market value dropped by €40m across the following season.

As the graphic above illustrates, Neymar ranks second after dropping by €52m across the 2019/20 season. The Brazilian registered 32 goal contributions that season but the drop in his market valuation was due to his age. Phil Foden occupies third space after dropping €50m in market value this season as he struggled to get into Manchester City’s starting eleven. Some notable players feature in the top ten list, including Lionel Messi in joint-seventh after a €38m drop in 2024/25.
